Genre: Mystery, Historical Romance, Suspense

Blurb:

Recently widowed, Charlotte Pennyworth is relishing her independence and it rankles to have to rely on a man to help her with an increasingly sinister stalker. Former Yardman, Elliot Baker, is reluctant to take on Charlotte’s case but despite himself and his history with another woman, he is drawn to the bright, attractive widow.

Sparks smolder between the PI and his client but neither is looking to form an attachment. Elliot thinks Charlotte is hiding something. Charlotte has no desire to marry again. Especially to a private investigator, no matter how handsome, brave and kind he is. The risk to his life and her heart is too great. But more dangerous than a menacing stalker is secrets and when Charlotte’s come to light, even the passion between them might not douse the flames of Elliot’s distrust.

My Review:

Oh my, I couldn’t believe that Miss Callie Hutton could write such gripping, suspenseful and romantic book. It was quite intriguing and the case was well-described. Well, Mrs. Charlotte Pennyworth is a recent widow who has been stalked. On certain occasions, she receives some gifts and oftentimes the gifts become terrifying therefore she visits a private investigator to resolve the case. When Elliot first sees Charlotte, the instant attraction he possesses towards her is evident. Both are determined not to involve any feelings yet as they spend and accompany each other during Charlotte’s social circle, the sexual attraction gets stronger and the Master hence stalker becomes more provoked eventually Elliot turns out to be the target.

Charlotte is a very attractive woman, not only does she possess good characters as a lady but also attractive features that catch Elliot’s attention. As I turned the few chapters I was believed to be led into the wrong Master and when the investigation led to some characters, it kept me guessing who could be the Master. The mystery did captivate me from the beginning until I was convinced that that person was the Master but the more I turned the pages the more I was being absorbed into the story.

Miss Callie Hutton did a very great job in writing this suspenseful romantic book, additionally when I thought that the ending was almost there, she brilliantly succeeded in putting a twist that blew me away. It is filled with pulse-pounding mystery and emotionally riveting romance. Thank you, Callie Hutton, for the ARC which I voluntary reviewed.

About the author
My historical romances are full of heat, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A study in Murder released this year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been very good. The second book in that series, The Sign of Death, will release in April of 2021.

Although those books are not strictly romance, the main characters, William, Lord Wethington, and Lady Amy Lovell have formed a friendship while solving a murder mystery. Who knows where that will take them?
